Spanish Women Exiled in France

In this conference, with which we commemorate the republican exile (1939-2019), we adopt a transnational perspective on the republican women who were temporarily or permanently exiled in France. We are interested, specifically, in the identity building process of the exiled women during their stay in France and focus on the study of autobiographical writings (letters, essays, diaries, autobiographical texts, interviews). The questions that guide our research are the following: What image of France–as a transit country, a receiving country or a new homeland– is reflected in the autobiographical works by the exiled women? How do the exiled women represent their experiences in the French refugee camps and in the Resistance? What image is created in the autobiographical works of the women’s agency during the exile in France? How do the exiled women construct their identity in the autobiographical works?
